\nThe best piece of advice I have is , Learn By Tutu. That is, have a go, take a look, see what others are doing and try it yourself. Exploring web tools and trialling a few is the best way to learn.
\nSlowly but steadily, we will upskill. We can't wait for someone to show us what to do. \nThanks for convening a great forum for us to discuss the direction \u2018IT\u2019 could take at Westbrook School.
\nI have many thoughts many of them jumbled and evolving as I talk with others.
\n\u2022 I believe that we need to trail some new technology within the school to see what will work for our school. If we trail a variety of technologies then the users and others within the school can decide what will work for them and pick it up to a level they are comfortable with.
\n\u2022 Looking at other schools and what they are doing could be useful to a point as I believe you have to try these things for yourself to see if they work for you. I know that I learn best through trail, error and play.
\n\u2022 I dislike with a passion the \u2018money barrier\u2019 as I feel that if we are committed to making advances in teaching and integrating technology within the curriculum then money barriers can be overcome with creativity and good planning.
\n\u2022 Using \u2018IT\u2019 is not an add on it should be integrated into our everyday planning, you have got me thinking about how I can do this better and I intend to do much better for the sake of the children I am teaching and so I don\u2019t become a dead cow floating down the river.
\n\u2022 I would not like to see new initiatives undertaken given to only one area of the school as I believe that all areas of the school have a lot to gain. Juniors who have access to the same technology as seniors surly are easier to teach as there is no need to go backwards before moving forwards.
\n\u2022 I agree that their will be jobs out there for our students that have not been invented yet and we need to prepare them as best we can for their life of learning.

\n1. Yes it is not compulsary (Although personally I feel IT development and PD should be treated just as other changes in the curriculum are.eg;New Maths programmes, The new PE Curriculum, Chunk Check Cheer)
\nWe adapt to include these in our class programmes and in fact a further Moove in IT would enhance and assist this.
\n2. Yes we should trial some new technology with the keen people.
\n3. I should refocus my attention on those who want to, not those who don't. (Instead of a school wide aproach)

\nGood on you for giving it a go. Its the "give it a go" attitude that is needed. I have not heard anyone say that we already need to know what is going on.

\nI think some people miss the point. Its not for us or about us. As teachers we need to give the whole ICT thing a go so we have at least a basic understanding of our students future.
\n
\nIts about the kids. Whether we like it or not ICT is a HUGE part of their future. We can either choose to help pave the way towards this future or try and igrnore ICT altogether. When we consider that lots of our kids will be working in jobs not even invented yet I know what the better choice is.

\nI love the idea of interactive white boards but don't really know that much about them.
\nI would love to find out more and to give them a try.
\nI am saddened to read that we are not up with the play on e learning. Perhaps a regular meeting of one rep from each team who is confident with taking back ideas and new knowldege to their team could be trialled. This way it could be made relevant for their team.

I see it as another tool that we can use to help the children learn, especially as many of our children are more computer savvy than we are. As you know I would be keen for an interactive whiteboard. Just yesterday I was thinking how fabulous an interactive whiteboard would be for starting my NZ topic. Having a large map of map of New Zealand on my interactive whiteboard, children able to interact with it, discussions, labelling, researching together. It would all be some much better than a wee A3 map that 28 chn are trying to look at to get how to plot, label, find places etc. I can think of many many ways that teaching and learning would be enhanced in my class by the addtion of an interactive whiteboard.

There are so many sites with interactive activities for use specifically with IWB's and it would be a wonderful way of intergrating curriculum areas. Plus, no more wiping the board and wishing you could keep brainstorms\/bubble plans etc that the kids had worked on. You could just save them and bring them back later to add to or amend if the children felt the need to - great for HOT type activities. IT is one area that I love but lack confidence in teaching and having to upskill to use IWB's would be a great learning opportunity for me too. We could learn together with the chilren. In one school I had a section in, the more able children were able to bring up the required pages. Also, some children today brought in bugs - how fantastic to be able to see them in action for instance via youtube. I tried to show volcano clips in class once on my laptop and it was ok but the screen and sound are of course not as good as on a big screen. This would give every teacher an idea of what is possible as I see this as the first barrier along with teacher knowledge and confidence. I know there is one in the staff room for people to read but do they?

\nSeveral schools are part of an ICT cluster. I don't know much about this and how it works but I do know that in those schools ICT ability has increased.

\nOf course the expectation as a staff that ICT will be used is important. There is no use spending money for another device to gather dust!

\nMore projectors, ideally roof mounted, would be great. This as I see it would be a first step.
